Erected in 1993 the plant Zeitz is one of the large new buildings of sugar refineries built in the new federal states after reunion. In the campaign 12.400 tons of beets are processed every day. Therefore Zeitz takes one of the leading positions amongst the Südzucker-plants. During the campaign from mid of September to end of December the plant is working twenty-four-seven without interruption. Per day around 1.000 tons of sugar are extracted. More than half of the syrup, that is generated as intermediate product, is stored in tanks. Together with the syrup from the sister plant Brottewitz it is processed into sugar from February to July. Thus a major part of the plant capacity is used nearly all over the year. The annual production amounts to around 200.000 tons of sugar. This covers the demand of approximately 6 million consumers. Storage capacity of the syrup tanks for the intermediate products is around 188.000 cubic meters in total. At the end of a beets campaign it is nearly fully used to capacity.

The maintenance works during the shutdowns were completed on time and according to high customer obligations regarding environmental protection as well as health and safety.

SGS was charged with maintenance works during the shutdowns EZ III in Südzucker-plant Zeitz (power station). These operations included a change of wear parts, check of particular plant components such as gearings, brackets, rollers, tracks and, if necessary, oil changes. Furthermore SGS is responsible for checking the drive- and deflection systems as well as bolts, bushings and cotter-pins. If necessary all cleaning joints have to be rewelded. From time to time it is also required to replace heat-proof stainless steel (1.4828) as well as high temperature resistant seals of pipe protection systems. Resulting from the maintenance works we were assigned to deliver and install piping for the beet earth cartrige No. 5 in the plant Zeitz. Our scope of services included the setting up of integration points to the existing piping for earth cartridge No. 4 as well as delivery of shaft construction for integration of pipes. Furthermore laying of a PE-pipeline to fill base and a pipeline on, respectively along the bank was part of our service as well as installation of 2 pumps with appropriate piping, fittings and non-return-valves in the MÖNCHBAUWERK (STAHLBETONSCHACHTBAUWERK) and delivery and installation of a grate cover for the MÖNCHBAUWERK (with overlay construction and guardrail).

Due to the maintenance know-how of SGS in similar plants as well as the presence directly in Zeitz an equal capacity utilization of company-own resources is assured. The own machinery enables short reaction times. The additional earth cartridge allows the Südzucker-plant in Zeitz an efficient and environmentally friendly recovery of beet earth as a basis for the sugar production. As a result of improved dehydration of the earth cartride the expenses for the earth return transport could be reduced enormously.
