The new power plant consists of eight Wärtsilä 31SG engines, which operate on natural gas and deliver an electrical output of approx. 90 MW and district heating of approx. 84 MW. Wärtsilä’s gas engines reach their full output from start-up within a few minutes to immediately balance the network. The power plant can also operate on the secondary balancing energy market in Germany from a standstill. This means that the plant feeds in electricity synchronous to the grid in less than 30 seconds. This is important, as the system uses more and more energy from fluctuating renewable energy sources such as wind and sun.
SGS Industrial Services has years of experiences in the installation of combined cycle power plants and therefore we were the best choice for this project. The mechanical assembly work as well as the electrical installation have already started at the end of September 2020. The entire scope of work includes the mechanical assembly of an 8-cell heating power plant: eight 31SG engines including eight generators (181 tons each), eight boilers (54.5 tons each), 210 tons exhaust systems, 623 tons steel construction, 450 tons ancillary units (tanks, pumps, heat exchangers, ...) and 110 tons of pipes (piping). As a total industrial services supplier, we also take care of the electrical installation of the entire system: 16 km of cable routes and conduits, LV and MV switchgear, 220 km of cables and all of the lighting and the fire alarm system.
On schedule despite corona
Thanks to the good planning by our SGS team and our strict hygiene regulations, we are on schedule with our installation work despite Corona times.
