New process technology
In terms of process technology, the new chromium plating plant is worldwide unique. The used process TCCT (Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology) for chromium plating of packaging steel uses trivalent chromium for surface treatment and thus fulfils the REACH requirements. The technology for this product – TCCTâ (Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology) – is based on a patent from Tata Steel Ijmuiden B.V., for which Rasselstein has acquired a license.
The assembly work has already started at the beginning of April 2021. On behalf of Andritz, our SGS team is responsible for all mechanical work at the new chromium plating line. This includes 1,000 tons of terminal equipment consisting of 250 tons of steel construction and 750 tons of mechanical equipment such as decoiler, two vertical conveyor belt storage systems, two coilers, etc. The process equipment consists of 500 tons of mechanical equipment (tanks for pretreatment and horizontal rinsing, chrome plating tank, extraction systems, belt dryer, media tub, etc.). Our experienced surveyors measure all alignment work with a Leica laser tracker to ensure highest accuracy.
Up to 50 SGS employees work at peak times to ensure a smooth and timely project flow. Work on the chrome-plating line is progressing and the first units are already in place. If all goes according to plan, the main assembly work should be completed by the end of November 2021. Operation of the new facility is planned for the beginning of next year.
In Andernach, at the world’s largest production location for packaging steel, thyssenkrupp Rasselstein produces tin coated or electrolytic chromium coated steel in thicknesses of 0.1 - 0.499 mm. The material is coated either with or without organic coatings, such as lacquer. The yearly output of packaging steel is 1.5 million tons. 90 percent of the produced material is used in the packaging sector as for example to package food, beverages or aerosols.
