The #SGSteam once again contributed to the energy transition with its assembly work. On the Volkswagen AG factory premises, two hard coal blocks from the West thermal power plant were replaced by a double block fired with natural gas. In this context, SGS Industrial Services carried out the mechanical assembly of two gas turbine lines as well as the entire electrical installation.

Scope of delivery & service

The mechanical assembly of two complete gas turbine lines was carried out on time by the #SGSteam with a turnaround time of 15 months.

Our team installed the following in detail:

  • 2 gas turbines including fuel gas system, each weighing approx. 220 t
  • 2 generators
  • 2GT Inlet Air System
  • 2 fuel gas units
  • 2 starting units
  • 2x Gas Turbine Cooling Air System
  • 2x Gas Turbine Lube Oil System
  • 100 tons of steel construction
  • 1200 piping spools (DN 15 – DN 400)
  • 700 flange connections
  • 550 welded connections
  • 5 tons of piping supports
  • Approximately 150 tons of sound enclosures

In the total construction period of around 22 months, in addition to the mechanical assembly of the gas turbine line, the #SGSteam::

  • installed 320 control cabinets
  • performed 20,000 connections
  • pulled 650 km of cable
  • installed 24 kilometers of cable support systems and
  • assembled 50 tons of U, I, C profiles

Confined space, many construction measures taking place at the same time from different trades and the limited storage options on site were a challenge. Which we as a team were able to master as usual in the highest SGS quality through professional time and logistics management.

About the project

Volkswagen AG is replacing the existing Wolfsburg-West hard coal-fired thermal power plant on the factory premises with a highly efficient gas and steam power plant from Mitsubishi. The new, highly efficient gas turbines aim to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in electricity and heat generation.

We are delighted to have gained a new customer from the energy sector, Mitsubishi Power Europe GmbH. As confirmation of the very good cooperation, we have already received follow-up orders. We are also pleased that we as the #SGSteam were able to make a massive contribution to reducing CO2 emissions.
