Our #SGSteam was responsible for the mechanical installation of a complete flue gas cleaning system, including piping installation, at EnBW AG in Karlsruhe. Power plant construction requires specialised knowledge of welding technology. Our experienced welders and fitters carried out precision work in a confined space and to a tight schedule. Thanks to excellent teamwork and cooperation with our partners, the plant was completed quickly and reliably.

Scope of delivery & service

Mechanical assembly of a complete flue gas cleaning system, including additional installation of piping.

Assembly of:

  • Absorber,
  • Drainage tank,
  • Limestone silos,
  • Ash silos,
  • Fly ash silos,
  • Electrostatic precipitator with flue gas path.

Our scope of services

Our customer AE&E Austria commissioned us with the mechanical assembly of the main components of a flue gas desulphurisation plant. The assembly work carried out by our #SGTeam included:

  • Absorber with a diameter of 16.5/19.5 m and a height of approx. 46 m,
  • Discharge tank with a diameter of 15 m and a height of approx. 29 m,
  • System components of the limestone silo,
  • Ash silo,
  • Gypsum silo,
  • Fly ash silo

In addition, our range of services included an electrostatic precipitator with a total tonnage of 3,700 tonnes and the associated flue gas path and induced draught fan. An average of 60-70 people were employed on this project, with a peak of over 100.

Our challenge

Power plant construction places high demands on welding technology. The welding requirements for the absorber and the internally rubberised drainage tank corresponded to quality class ‘B’. These had to be produced with correspondingly flawless and ground surfaces. SGS has the relevant certifications and experience, which enabled our #SGSteam to master this challenge as well. Added to this were the limited space available, warehouse management and coordination with other trades and companies. Good coordination within the team was essential for the success of the project.

For our customer, completing the project on time and professionally was a top priority. SGS invests heavily in expanding its welding expertise, for example by recruiting experienced employees and setting up its own welding academy. These efforts have once again proven useful for our customer.
