One of Europe’s largest electrolysis plants for the production of green hydrogen is being built in Bruck an der Leitha. The 140 MW plant will be the largest of its kind in Austria and South-Eastern Europe, and ranks among the five largest plants in Europe. In future, up to 23,000 tonnes of green hydrogen are to be produced here annually to replace fossil hydrogen in the refining processes at the OMV Schwechat Refinery, thereby making a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of the OMV Schwechat Refinery. For SGS Industrial Services, the project is an example of how complex industrial plants can be successfully implemented through the close integration of mechanical assembly and electrical installation. On behalf of Siemens Energy Austria GmbH, SGS is responsible for the complete assembly of key plant components.

Scope of delivery & service

Mechanical assembly and electrical installation of the new hydrogen plant.

  • Assembly of the electrolysis system
  • Assembly of recooling systems
  • Installation of tanks, heat exchangers and plant modules
  • Mechanical assembly of around 700 tonnes of equipment
  • Assembly of eight Elyzer arrays, each comprising six modules
  • Installation of two five-stage hydrogen piston compressors, each with a capacity of 5.4 MW
  • Laying of 225 kilometres of cable
  • Installation of 23 kilometres of cable support systems
  • Fitting of around 15,000 electrical connections
  • Installation of 90 control cabinets

Special features and challenges

A 140-MW electrolysis plant is being built in Bruck an der Leitha on behalf of OMV; it will be the largest of its kind in Austria and South-Eastern Europe, and one of the largest electrolysis plants in Europe. . The local production of green hydrogen will, in future, support the decarbonisation of the OMV Schwechat refinery by replacing fossil hydrogen in the refining processes. The project represents a significant step in OMV’s transformation.
